It's time to remove the Edgar risk and restore Lake Pedder.
Call on Minister Plibersek to consider the alternative to high risk dam works - restoring the globally iconic, original, Lake Pedder as Australia’s UN restoration flagship project.
The ‘high risk’ Edgar and Scotts Peaks dams, impounding Tasmania’s Lake Pedder, are built on an active fault line and require $100m+ in ‘strengthening’ against possible seismic activity. The only fool proof risk removal of catastrophic failure of the Edgar Dam, is to dewater the Serpentine impoundment. This would expose the original Lake Pedder, which remains physically intact below the present impoundment. Various ecological studies, two Federal inquiries and Australia’s 2021 State of the Environment Report, have demonstrated it is possible to restore Lake Pedder. The only impediment is the lack of political will.
The Pedder Pledge is a commitment to vote for parties who are prioritizing nature—and the restoration of Lake Pedder—at the ballot box in the upcoming federal election.
By taking the pledge, you are signalling to politicians, media, and the wider public that environmental restoration is a key election issue.
This collective action builds pressure on candidates to support a feasibility study for Pedder’s restoration while demonstrating the growing movement of Australians who want bold action for biodiversity.
