Dear Minister Plibersek,

As you know restoration of wetlands and peatlands worldwide is a critical Nature based solution to the urgent and accelerating global heating emergency.

The United Nations has written to all state parties seeking nominations for Flagship projects on ecosystem restoration but to date Australia has not nominated a project. The deadline for the latest round of nominations has been extended until May 31 2024 to better represent diversity in projects and nations involved.

This provides a brilliant opportunity for Australia to nominate the restoration of Lake Pedder as Australia’s Flagship Project in the UN Decade and bring global attention to the work of scientists, civil society and Government working together to restore Nature and to uphold the natural values for which the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area was listed as World Heritage.

It could also be a central plank of the Global Nature Positive Summit that you are hosting in Sydney later this year consequent to Australia signing the Global Biodiversity Framework in 2022.  When you announced the Summit you said,
“… the world came together in support of a nature positive future. That means protecting the places that matter, while also restoring environments that have been damaged in the past.

"Turning the tide like this, from nature destruction to nature repair, will require a mighty global effort. We need government leading way, but we also need the private sector, environmentalists and First Nations groups all pulling in the same direction.”

What better way to showcase Australia’s commitment to turning the tide than to nominate the restoration of Lake Pedder in Tasmania as Australia’s Flagship project.

Hydro Tasmania’s proposal to rebuild the high risk Edgar dam on the Serpentine impoundment, which flooded Lake Pedder and a 242 sqkm area of South West Tasmania, presents an immediate opportunity. Instead of rebuilding the dam, it could be decommissioned and Lake Pedder, the Serpentine River and the extensive peatlands in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area be restored.

This restoration project meets the objectives of the Global Biodiversity Framework and the criteria of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration in that it has global significance as a World Heritage Area of outstanding universal value, it is large scale and there can be demonstrated progress by the end of the decade, now only six years away. There will be demonstrated and measurable carbon and threatened species habitat benefits consistent with the objectives of the Global Biodiversity Framework.

Please Minister, take this opportunity offered by the UN to nominate the restoration of Lake Pedder as Australia’s Flagship project in the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
